Throughout his life, Joseph Mercurio was an avid photographer with a love of the many facets of New York, particularly New York City. His photographs exhibit the disparity in wealth evident in the city throughout his life.
Professionally, Joseph was a nationally and internationally acclaimed political consultant, having worked for national parties and candidates in the US and abroad, including nine US presidential candidates, seven US presidents, and countless US Senators, Congressmen, Governors, Attorneys General, and other elected and appointed officials. He was a member of the board of the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC) and the Director of the Greater New York Chapter of the AAPC. He also advised other political consultants on strategy, polling, messaging, and communications. He helped found, then directed and taught at both the New York University and Fordham University graduate programs in political consulting. He personally created modern political media buying as we know it today. Joseph's legacy is profound.
The first portfolio of Joseph's photographs that we will be making available to license depicts homeless people on the Bowery in New York City during the late sixties and early seventies. The physical, economic, and cultural landscapes have dramatically changed from the time that these photographs were taken. None of the subjects remain and Joseph's photographs preserve a view of the city and America during a transitional time in our nation's history.
